I want to tell you something about birth affirmations that most people don’t say.
Just saying nice things doesn’t work.
If you’re carrying real fear, real anxiety, real doubt about your body and your ability to give birth — and you sit down and recite a list of positive statements — nothing is going to shift. You’ll probably feel a little hollow about it. Maybe even frustrated. And you might decide, like so many women do, that “birth affirmations didn’t work for me.”
But that’s not a birth affirmation problem. That’s a how to use them problem. And it’s exactly what this post is here to fix.
I’m Anne — holistic pregnancy and infant and toddler sleep coach. My second pregnancy was one of the hardest seasons of my life. Anxiety, panic attacks, pregnancy insomnia, a full catalog of physical struggles, fears I didn’t expect to have because I’d been pregnant before. I was in a really dark place.
Birth affirmations were one of two practices that genuinely moved the needle for me (the other was hypnobirthing). I’d sit in my quiet living room after my son was asleep — sometimes with incense burning, sometimes just in the stillness — and go through my affirmation cards. And I cried. Often. Not because I was sad, but because I was feeling into the words. Letting them land somewhere real, not just bouncing off the surface of my fear.
That’s the difference. And once you understand it, affirmations become one of the most powerful tools in your pregnancy mindset toolkit.
Why Birth Affirmations Work (When You Use Them Right)
Affirmations are not mind-over-matter. They’re not “think positive and your fears will disappear.” They’re an energetic practice — a way of intentionally shifting the internal landscape you’re living in, especially during a time when that landscape can feel overwhelmed by worry, stress, and the unknown.
Here’s what I want you to understand: your job when doing birth affirmations is not to believe every word perfectly. Your job is to either feel neutral about the statement, or to genuinely feel into the positive energy of it. To let it land in your body, not just your head.
Some affirmations will land easily. Others will trigger immediate resistance — a voice inside saying yeah, right or I don’t actually believe that. Pay attention to those moments. That resistance is information. It’s pointing to a belief — often a subconscious one — that’s worth examining. Where did it come from? Is it actually yours, or did you pick it up from someone else’s birth story, a scary movie, a comment at a baby shower? Does it represent who you are right now, in this pregnancy? Does it align with the birth you’re trying to create?
Those questions, explored in a journal after your affirmation practice, are where the real work happens.
How to Use This Practice
Find a quiet space when you can — even two minutes counts. Before you start, place one hand on your heart and one hand on your baby. Take three slow, deep breaths. This isn’t just ritual — it actively begins to regulate your nervous system and shifts you out of the running-list-stress-mode of daily life and into your body, where this practice actually lives.
Then move through the affirmations. Say each one twice. Feel into it. Notice what comes up. Keep breathing.
After — if you have time and feel called to it — journal. Write down whatever thoughts or fears the affirmations stirred. Don’t filter. Just let it out and then ask: where does this come from? Is it mine? Am I ready to release it?
You can use this practice in the morning, at night, in the car, during a quiet moment between appointments. There is no wrong time and no wrong way. The only requirement is that you actually feel it rather than just recite it.

A Note on the Ones That Feel Hard
If you read through that list and one of them made you flinch — especially something like “I am not afraid. I was created to do this” or “My body knows how to birth my baby” — sit with that.
You don’t have to force yourself to believe it. Start somewhere more neutral: “I am open to feeling calm.” Or simply “I am safe right now.” Work your way toward the ones that challenge you. The resistance is the work.
And if you’re in a place where no affirmation feels remotely accessible — if your fears feel too big, your anxiety too persistent — please don’t just push through with a practice guide. Please reach out. To your provider, to a therapist, to a trusted support person. You deserve more than a list to recite on your own.
Make It Yours
You are not alone. Every woman birthing alongside you right now — feel that collective strength. It’s yours.
