Eight years of sleep coaching means eight years of room assessments, eight years of families asking “is this product good?” and eight years of watching what actually works in real homes with real babies.

The baby product market is enormous and growing. New products launch constantly, and the amount of information — and misinformation — about what your baby needs to sleep can feel genuinely overwhelming. So let me save you some of the Googling. This is my personal shortlist: the products I’ve seen show up again and again in the homes of families I’ve worked with, the products I’ve used with my own two boys, and the ones I feel genuinely confident recommending because they’ve been tested not just by me, but by hundreds of families over nearly a decade.

A note before we dive in: just because something isn’t on this list doesn’t mean it isn’t wonderful. This is not a comprehensive catalog. It’s a curated starting point from someone who has seen a lot of what works — and a lot of what doesn’t.

Newborn Favorites

Baby Shusher The Baby Shusher is one of my favorite simple, effective newborn tools. It mimics the rhythmic sounds of the womb — a repetitive, steady shushing sound that can genuinely break a crying pattern and help a newborn settle. It runs for 15 or 30 minutes, it doesn’t get as loud as a traditional sound machine, and it’s portable enough to bring close to your baby in a way a full-size machine isn’t. It’s the size of your hand, inexpensive, and uncomplicated — which matters a lot when you’re deep in the newborn phase and already managing a thousand things at once. Use code ANNE15 for 15% off.

Baby Carriers — Solly Wrap + Ergo Baby Newborns need co-regulation for sleep, and that’s not a phase to fight through — it’s a biological reality. Contact napping and baby wearing are genuinely beneficial in the early weeks and months, and having a good carrier makes it sustainable. I recommend having two options.

For a fabric wrap, the Solly wrap is my top choice. It’s a long stretch of soft fabric that feels close and natural, and while it can seem intimidating the first time, there are simple tutorials and once you’ve done it a few times, it becomes second nature. For a more structured option with buckles and straps, Ergo Baby has been a consistent favorite — ergonomically designed so it supports your back and your baby equally, which matters a lot when you’re postpartum and healing. With my second son, having a carrier was essential. I had a three-year-old to chase and a newborn who needed to be close. A carrier made both possible at the same time.

Love to Dream Swaddle Not every baby takes to a swaddle, but for those who do, arms placement matters more than most parents realize. The Love to Dream positions baby with arms up — hands near their cheeks — which is actually a more natural position for most newborns than traditional arms-down swaddles. The zipper design makes it very difficult to escape, which if you’ve ever had a newborn who breaks out of every swaddle you try, you understand why that matters. It’s also hip-healthy, which is important for babies who are still developing. If you’re in the swaddle phase and haven’t tried this one, it’s worth it.

Sleep Environment at Home

Nanit Baby Monitor If I had to point to the product I see most consistently in room assessments, it’s the Nanit. It’s phone-based, which means no separate monitor to charge or carry around — everything is on your app. If you have more than one child, you can split the screen and watch both simultaneously. The zoom function is excellent, the setup is straightforward, and the breathing monitoring gives a level of reassurance that matters when you’re a new parent. I still have a Nanit in my eight-year-old’s room — not hovering over his bed, but there when I need a quick visual check at night. The optional sleep tracking feature gives you weekly reports on your baby’s sleep patterns, which as a sleep coach I find incredibly useful and many families love having as a reference.

Slumber Pod I cannot overstate how much this product would have changed my life when my first son was a newborn. The Slumber Pod is a pop-up tent that goes over a travel crib, blocks out light completely, breathes well, and collapses into a compact bag that fits in a suitcase. It comes with a fan option for warmer climates and has a built-in pouch for your baby monitor so you maintain full visibility even with the tent closed. The first time I used it, my son was four months old. I was nervous. He slept beautifully. He’s now almost four and has graduated to the Slumber Tot — their inflatable toddler bed version — and still calls it his tent. If your family travels even occasionally, this is one of the best investments you will make. Use code EMPOWERED for 10% off — and they frequently stack that discount on top of their own sales, so check for promotions before you buy.

Hatch Sound Machine + Time-to-Rise The Hatch shows up in nearly every room assessment I do, and for good reason. It functions as a sound machine, a nightlight, and a time-to-rise clock — all controlled from your phone. You can set programs, adjust colors and sounds remotely, and the time-to-rise feature becomes genuinely useful around age two or three when toddlers start understanding “your light is still red, which means it’s not morning yet.” Both of my boys use their Hatch nightly. My eight-year-old has a routine: one tap for quiet music during reading, another tap for white noise through the night, and in the morning it shifts to his “morning” color. It’s a product that genuinely grows with your child from newborn through the early school years.

Yogasleep Hush — Portable Sound Machine A full-size machine at home is great. A backup that runs on battery is essential. The Yogasleep Hush is small, inexpensive (around $20), and will run for up to eight hours if the power cuts out. I cannot count how many times this has saved us — a power flicker in the night, a trip where outlets weren’t convenient, a stroller nap that needed some noise coverage. It comes with a little clip ring so you can attach it anywhere. It’s not fancy. It doesn’t need to be. It just works, reliably, every time.

Sleep Sacks: What They Are and Which Ones to Consider

If you’re new to sleep sacks, here’s the simple version: a sleep sack is a wearable blanket. Safe, zip-up, and designed to keep your baby warm without any loose fabric in their sleep space. For babies especially, the crib should be completely clear — fitted sheet, nothing else. No pillows, no loose blankets, no wedges. A sleep sack gives your baby warmth and comfort in a safe, contained way.

Sleep sacks come in different weights, measured in TOG — from 0.5 (very light) to 2.5 (warmest). Each brand provides a chart to help you pair the right TOG with your baby’s room temperature and clothing layers. The optimal sleep environment for babies and toddlers is generally between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

Here are the ones I see most and feel good recommending:

Woolino — A four-season sleep sack made from merino wool that naturally regulates body temperature. One sack for all year, which simplifies things considerably and makes it an excellent value over time. This is probably my most-recommended option for families who want to keep it simple.

Nested Bean — Known for the small weighted pouch on the chest (or back on reversible styles) that mimics the gentle pressure of a hand. Great for babies who are soothed by that sense of contact.

Burt’s Bees — Organic cotton, simple, reliable. On the lighter side in terms of weight, which makes it a great warm-weather option.

Gunamuna — The one I reach for when I want something truly cozy and plush. Long-sleeve options are available, and they size up well for tall babies and toddlers who outgrow other brands. Slightly higher price point, but the quality shows.

Kyte Baby — Soft, drapey fabrics with thoughtful design details. A great option if you like something with a lighter, more breathable feel.

One thing I always recommend: if you’re going to use a sleep sack, use it for every nap and every bedtime. Consistency matters. Over time, babies genuinely begin to associate the sleep sack with sleep — putting it on becomes part of the wind-down ritual, a quiet signal that rest is coming. That kind of association is a good one.

What’s Waiting on the Other Side

When your baby’s sleep environment is set up thoughtfully — the right darkness, the right sound, the right temperature, the right containment — sleep becomes easier. Not just for your baby, but for you. You stop second-guessing whether the room is dark enough or whether the sound machine is loud enough. You travel without dread because you have the tools to recreate your baby’s sleep environment anywhere. You go to bed knowing your setup is working for your child, not against them. That’s the goal — not perfection, but a foundation solid enough to build on.
